Spring/Summer 2021...Color Us Happy
As we make our way out of the Winter doldrums and the challenging pandemic, simple things can cheer us up. For me, it’s seeing the first daffodil that pops its happy yellow head up out of the ground, and then watching each day as more and more join the first one, forming large clumps of the joyful yellow color.
The color choices you wear can also lighten your mood, giving you more energy, or soothing your body and mind, helping you to relax.
When you dress in your best colors and your best styles, you become comfortable…and that’s when you can enjoy yourself.
This Season: Uplifting and Comfortable
COLOR:
|
You will have a collection of happy colors from which to choose: energized reds, corals and poppy orange.
Mint greens, soft jade shades and many blues. Mint greens combined with blue, including navy and deep denim, look very refreshing.
The jade tones worn with navy or dark denim blue look classic and friendly.
The neutrals: camel, beige, gray, navy, indigo denims.
The neutral + hues: sage, moss, bayleaf-type greens. |
DESIGN
|
You will see a fresh presentation of watercolor effects, described as “painterly,” which are actual, original art by painters. There is a new combination print of stripes with an overlay of florals. This look needs to use the same colors for each print, and must be within your Harmony’s design scale.
Polka dots are the happiest of all. (A Spring Harmony print only.)
Stripes: Traditional and block stripes. They are also combined in a mix of wide, medium, and narrow, in coordinated colors.
Florals, small, colorful flowers, or medium to large-scale tropical florals, along with artistic, stylized flowers.
Mid-century abstract mod prints.
Nature themes like the butterfly, dragonfly, or animal, especially the leopard motif.
Paisley and bandana prints. Tie-dye designs.
Buttons add a design element on so many pieces of clothing this season. |
FABRIC
| Lace and artful embroidery on all clothing categories, top to bottom, (The Fall Harmony needs to choose more geometric or leafy lace and embroidery, not flowery.)
Both drapey knits and the sporty Shaker knits.
Bamboo is added to knits for softness and drape.
Sheers, like georgette, in prints.
Crinkle gauze.
Relaxed cottons. |
STYLE
|
When buying a new item this season, to get more for your money, choose something that can go anywhere…a “Go-to,” so to speak. You can always elevate a basic piece by adding jewelry, dressier shoes, and an accent color.

STYLE
Tops
|
Sleeves are the dominant focus. Many sleeves feature romantic lace, flouncy and ruffled sleeves, puffed sleeves, ties on the sleeve hems, and buttons on the shoulder, or accenting the outer side of the sleeve, near the bottom edge.
Roll-up sleeves offer a long or 3/4 length choice
All necklines: V-neck, square, angled, notched, curved, and elegant draping necklines.
Big shirts can be worn as a light-weight jacket over a tank top.
The always flattering wrap-style with cross-body gathers from one side to the other is good for tummy camouflage.
Tunics with sleeves or sleeveless, some with sheer sleeves.
Tops will be seen in stripes, florals, and leafy designs or abstracts.
Embroidery details offer cute, fun, or feminine interest. |
STYLE
Pants
|
There are so many leg lengths and widths, making it easy for you to select your most comfortable and flattering style.
Sailor jeans, with buttons on each side, have wider legs. High-waisted bell-bottom jeans. A high pump or platform sandal will elevate both styles from the hippy era.
Button-accented cropped pants. The crop jean with a flared hem. The wide-leg crop. Casual tie-waist chinos.
Utility-inspired sporty pants, Cargo pants with cargo pockets and buckled hems.
Checks, polka dots, abstract and small florals prints give pants some personality. A solid color from the print should be chosen for your top. (You always want color near your face, not a neutral.)
Palazzo pants, tied at the waist. Wear with a fitted, or trim, blouse, or with a knit tee. This is a comfortably elegant look. Pleated trousers.
Leggings, made with tummy-slimming technology, pockets for your essentials, done up in many prints or solid colors. Try branching out from your “lazy-dressing” black leggings once in a while. Any deep solid color is also slimming. |
STYLE
Skirts
|
Remember the skort? It’s back. It’s a pull-on style short skirt with attached shorts underneath, solving the modesty issue when sitting or active.
Denim skirts, cotton canvas skirts. Skirts with tie-waist.
Relaxed, floating maxi skirts with flattering, flared silhouettes. |
STYLE
Dresses
|
Fresh, soft dresses in floral, leafy, or abstract prints offered in small to large scales. Remember: only Springs wear the small prints and the happy polka dots. All other Harmonies choose from medium to large prints.
“Medium” scale is about 2 1/2”. The use of color can visually affect the actual size, providing you with some leeway.
Simple classic dresses in colorful prints or solid colors. Short and maxi-length dresses.
Easy, pullover knit tee-shirt dresses. Some have a figure-shaping wrap-style tie on one side.
Comfortable denim dresses with short, tailored, or flared sleeves. |
STYLE
Jackets
|
All jackets have a casual, easy going vibe.
Jean jackets are still the popular casual choice, and have new variations. Choices include colorful solids, or prints, including painterly water color prints, sometimes embroidered or
with an added peplum for a feminine update.
Abstract and floral jacquard print jackets offer some personality to your solid outfit underneath.
Ruched-sleeve knit jackets are a summertime cooler choice for added presence to a tailored dress or pant outfit.
Step up your routine (and Zoom meetings) with a blazer… all new in a comfortable knit.
A collarless, V-neck sweater jacket, or the classic round-neck Chanel knit jacket, would
also look great for meetings.
Denim blazers are slightly shaped and longer to below the hip. They are also available in colors other than indigo.
The traditional suit jacket is becoming a bit more sharp in the shoulders.
Lightweight cardigans, open front, loose, and longer, or mid-hip cardigans with buttons.
The casual oversized boyfriend cardigan. This style looks best on taller, or slim, people.
Knit shrugs add a finished look to top your summer dress or tank top. Hemlines may be curved or squared off. You’ll see crochet, lacy, pointelle, and smooth knits. |
